Big Nimbys |
| December
18th |
|
From BACIT member Andrew Wallace:
Nick MP mentioned the Central Railway (not to be
confused with Central trains, our local rail operator). They
plan a rail line to carry trucks and freight from Liverpool
- Sheffield - Toton - Leicester - old Great central Railway
- anti-clockwise round M25 and thence to the Channel Tunnel.
See their website.
However, more interestingly is the antis' website.
This is NIMBYism on a grand scale! Looks like its
driven by people in the Chiltern / Buckinghamshire area
though, as they seem to be the prominent local
group.
You can see a map of the proposed route here. |

Nick Palmer Writes |
| December
12th |
|
Dr Nick Palmer MP posted the following on the BACIT email
list following the latest announcements
from the Department of
Transport.
The announcement today basically says yes to both the M1
multi-modal study package including the M1 widening (which I
didn't support) and continuing support for the tram, and
indeed the Nottingham Parkway station and pedestrian
improvements in Nottingham and other stuff - in fact, at first
reading, Notts has got absolutely everything it asked for
(which doesn't mean it was all the right thing to ask!). But
the tram still has the usual stages to go through as before -
this merely confirms that the Government is encouraging
further work. The big project nearing the front of the
pipeline but not mentioned here is the Central Railway
proposal (not to be confused with our local Central Rail)to
run a predominantly freight line from Liverpool to Toton to
London to the Chunnel. This will come up for decision next
year, followed (if approved) by the mother of all public
enquiries. If it goes through it will take a huge proportion
of lorry traffic off the north-south motorways. |

The Arrogance of the Anti's |
| December
12th |
|
One the worst traits of the anti-tram
lot is their arrogance. They constantly claim that they speak
for everyone in their campaign against the tram. So its was
particularly gratifying to see that arrogance demonstrated and
destroy in the space of one evening. We went delivering
leaflets in the Cator Lane area urging people to claim the
tram stop they deserve and a man came out of a house we had
just delivered to, thrusting our leaflet back on us, claiming
that we were wasting our time because everyone on the road was
against the tram. So I was a very happy man when only two
hours later we received our first email from a resident of
that road supporting our campaign. |

Cator Lane. Demand Your Stop |
| December
12th |
|
One the major short comings of NET's
current plan for Line 3 is the lack of a stop on Cator Lane.
This, despite being the heart of the anti-tram territory, is
an excellent spot for a stop, with a large residential
catchment area. BACIT is campaigning for a stop but unless the
people who live in the area add their voice then there is no
hope of getting a stop. Contact NET directly or email us at catorlane@bacit.org and
we will pass your comments on to NET. |

The New Battleground |
| December
12th |
|
As plans for Line 3 progress a new
area of contention is arising in the fight for a first class
tram system. Broxtowe Council want the tram to run into
Beeston Square via Styring Street and the precinct. This will
inevitably require the removal of some shops. As ever BACIT
will fight for the best compensation scheme possible for those
shops that will need new premises and for those that will be
disrupted during the construction process. With the
redevelopment of the Shaw & Marvin site and the
possibility of the entire fire station and multi-storey car
park area being redeveloped, central Beeston could radically
change over the next ten years. Now is the time to get
involved. Talk to your councillors, make your voice heard and
ensure Beeston continues to flourish as a shopping and
community centre. |
