Harmful?

"How can you be so naive?..."
So starts an anti-tram e-mail BACIT recently received. Like most of
what you hear from people against the tram, it is full of misleading
statements. Read the full text and BACIT's response.

From the Nottingham
and Long Eaton Recorder
"Tram line aids house sale?
A proposed tram stop has helped a couple sell their house within days.
Terry McCann, 62, and wife Val, 59, credit the quick sale of their home
on Neston Drive, Cinderhill, for almost £80,000
to its location near Nottingham’s first tram
line. The stop, at the end of their street, will open next year on the
Nottingham Express Transit (NET) network’s Line
One."

National and Local Press
Coverage
|
|
April 29th
|
|
|
BACIT is getting lots of good coverage. Rail, a
magazine for the rail industry, carried this message of support "My
very best wishes to BACIT - any group campaigning for sound rail schemes,
in whatever form, deserves support. I hope BACIT gets its trams".
Rail No 434, 1 May 2002 pp71. Locally, the Long Eaton Trader has again
made the tram a lead story. Read the full article here.

Noel Street: Before &
After
|
|
April 25th
|
|
|
BCBRA, the
anti-tram group, have made a lot of noise about
the disruption that Line Two construction will cause and use a picture of
the work in progress on Noel Street on their posters to emphasise the
point. However, that is not the full story, the construction period is
relatively short and the benefits will last generations. Track
construction on some parts of Noel Street is now finished and as you can see
here, the street is back to normal.

April 24th
|
|
|
The Halifax
advertised in the 18th April edition of the Nottingham Property Guide a
house on Noel St and made the fact it was on the Tram route a major
selling point. The property has already been sold subject to contract.
See this
story about a different fast selling property on the NET site as
well.

Nick Palmer Briefing Document
Online
|
|
April 17th
|
|
|
Nick Palmer MP has put a briefing document prepared for him by an
assistant on his web site http://www.broxtowelabour.org/.
The full report can be found here.
"A lot of the debate has been speculation, as relatively few
people locally have experience of a modern tram system. So I asked Dr
David Wright, who works in my office, to spend days in Sheffield and Croydon, interviewing residents, travellers,
shopkeepers and estate agents about their experiences. I asked him not to
try to produce a pro- or anti-case but simply report what he found. As
you will see, his findings were reassuring on some points (e.g. house
prices) but not on others (e.g. the impact on shops)."

Trams an Overwhelming Success
in Croydon
|
|
April 9th
|
|
|
Received this from a friend and Croydon
resident "The interesting thing to note about the Croydon tram is that it has been far more successful
in the early months of operation and probably continues to be so that any
other tram system. There were 15 million
passenger journeys in the first 10 months of operation (which compares to
17.2 million on Manchester
for the whole of the year 2000). New passenger figures are due to be
released at the end of this month. Have a look at Croydon Tramlink, which
gives some information on passenger numbers and drop in car journeys."
